Young skin produces lots of ceramides, but as we age ceramide production in our skin reduces as does the quality and quantity of ceramides. Our body also makes less collagen as we age.
This affects our skin barrier and can lead to dry, rough skin, wrinkles, redness and dehydration as the ceramides we have are not preventing moisture loss like they once did when we produced more of them.
