How Collagen Production Shapes Our Skin As We Age
- In our twenties, collagen production operates at its peak, contributing to plump, smooth, and resilient skin.
- As we venture into our early thirties, collagen synthesis begins to slow down, leading to the emergence of fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of firmness.
- By the time we reach our forties and beyond, collagen production dwindles significantly, resulting in a lack of firmness, deeper wrinkles, and a pronounced loss of elasticity.
Vitamins A and C:
If you are looking for ways to stimulate your skin’s natural production of collagen for skin elasticity, look no further than applying natural forms of Vitamins A and C directly to the skin.
Sufficient levels of Vitamin C are vital for our skin’s production of collagen as without it our body is unable to produce or store collagen. By supporting enzymatic reactions necessary for collagen formation, Vitamin C helps to maintain skin firmness, reduce wrinkles, and promote a more radiant complexion. Vitamin A slows down the age-related breakdown of collagen, whilst also helping to boost the skin’s collagen production.
You can find both Vitamin A and Vitamin C in plentiful supply in the Passion seed, Rosehip, Açai Seed, Blackcurrant seed oils and Sea Buckthorn Fruit oil which all feature in our ‘You Must be Sisters’ Collagen and Ceramide boosting facial oil.
Renowned for its brightening and rejuvenating effects, Vitamin C is a vital component in collagen synthesis, Blackcurrant seed oil has four times the level of Vitamin C of an orange and the Sea Buckthorn Fruit oil has ten times the Vitamin C of an orange and contains over one hundred nutrients.
Many brands now offer synthetic forms of Vitamin C separately and in their products but to us at least, naturally occurring Vitamin C within the oils will work more in harmony with your skin to promote collagen.
Passion Flower Seed Oil is also a key ingredient in our Keep The Peace Balancing and Clearing facial oil
Squalene:
Found in Amaranth seed oil, squalene is a powerhouse ingredient known for its ability to hydrate and replenish the skin. It helps to promote collagen production, enhancing skin firmness and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Anthocyanins:
Found in Açai seed oil, anthrocyanins are potent antioxidants which combat free radical damage and inflammation. By shielding collagen from degradation, anthocyanins aid in preserving skin elasticity and promoting a more youthful complexion.

Flavonoids: Also found in Açai seed oil, flavonoids exhibit remarkable anti-ageing properties. They stimulate collagen synthesis, promote tissue repair, and protect against UV-induced collagen degradation, resulting in smoother, firmer skin with reduced signs of ageing.

Ellagic Acid:
Abundant in Borage Flower Seed Oil, ellagic acid is what is known as an essential fatty acid and it boasts potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to prevent collagen breakdown caused by environmental aggressors, while also stimulating collagen production for improved skin texture and resilience.
