My skin never used to react like this; why does it now?
In this week's video blog we discuss a commonly asked question from our customers: "Why is my skin suddenly reacting to my skincare?"
Talking through the science of skin and how its tolerance to chemicals can change as we age, we have shared our tips and insights including:
💚 How our skin changes as we age
💚 Why our skin barrier can become more sensitive to skincare products
💚 Which magic organic ingredient can help to strengthen our skin's resilience, regenerate moisture in our skin, restore glow and reduce redness.
It’s only natural that as we age, our skin will change too. Exposure to sun, wind and changes in our hormone levels mean we are not the same person at 50 years old as we were at 25 years old and our skin usually becomes noticeably drier.
So, what are the biggest reasons?
As our skin ages, our skin's barrier function weakens and it can no longer retain moisture as effectively as it once did. Our skin starts slowing down its natural production of lipids (oils) and proteins (collagen and elastin for example) in our 20s.
By our 40s and 50s, our skin can feel noticeably drier and flakier. The effects of UV and weather damage increases fine lines and wrinkles and concurrently our body produces less collagen and elastin (you can read more about this here), Our skin starts slowing down its natural production of lipids (oils) which reduces hydration and skin elasticity which means our skin can begin to sag. And, when menopause arrives, oestrogen levels drop, making the skin thinner and less elastic.
So, what can we do?
The best way to care for your skin is to maintain and enhance a healthy skin barrier to ensure that it will retain moisture and oil, and prevent any further damage . It is important to be mindful of over-exfoliating or using harsh synthetic-chemical skincare as these can weaken your skin barrier.
Using waterless, and organic oil-based skincare is an easy, gentle and effective way to replenish oils and stimulate proteins lost due to ageing. Organic cold-pressed oil contains high amounts of essential fatty acids and these help maintain a healthy barrier by protecting skin against water loss, keeping moisture in and damaging elements out.
If you have noticed your skin become more reactive through the perimenopause or menopause, we also have our Skin focus page here which shares more details on how hormonal changes can affect our skin's sensitivity.
