What goes into our skincare when we take the water out?

This week on the blog we wanted to share more about the benefits of waterless skincare for your skin, the planet, and your purse, as well as to tell you what we do include in our waterless skincare range when we take the water out!

Most skincare products on the market contain around 80-90% water making it the lead ingredient by far, which only serves to thin and stretch the product so you pay more for less. If only the financial element was all there was to consider; there is also the fact that as soon as you add water to a product it requires chemical preservatives.

Water-based products mixed with active ingredients such as oils and botanicals will begin to spoil quickly and so they usually are preserved and emulsified using harsh chemical preservatives. They also often contain synthetic fragrances, emulsifiers and artificial ingredients which can be harmful to the skin. More often than not, the claims on labels are simply not true. In the beauty industry, a product can say it is organic even if only 1% of the ingredients it contains are organic. Of course we trust what we read on labels ands websites, and wonder why we struggle to find products that are actually effective for our skincare needs.

Using only waterless skincare means that you are not paying a premium for fillers found in many commercial skincare products.  Not using water and other fillers means we can squeeze the maximum active ingredients into all our products, to nourish, repair and enhance your skin with every use.

Every product in our range of waterless skincare is not only 100% organic or wild-harvested, but every element has been carefully considered and crafted to only include ingredients which actively nourish and improve the health and appearance of your skin. Our oil-based products are free from all known toxic chemicals, and they work in harmony with your skin’s natural oil production to leave your skin looking, and feeling, healthy and glowing giving you peace of mind that you aren’t doing any harm to your health or to the planet.

We believe your skin will instantly look and feel softer and more hydrated after using our range of organic, natural, and waterless skincare.

4 key benefits of waterless skincare:

Ideal for Sensitive Skin Conditions: Waterless skincare is particularly beneficial for those with sensitive skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and acne/breakouts. These conditions can be aggravated by the presence of chemicals commonly found in commercial skincare products. By opting for waterless formulations, you reduce the risk of irritation and inflammation, providing a gentler and more soothing experience for sensitive skin types.

Enhanced Efficacy: The efficacy of the ingredients is more concentrated, leading to faster, better and longer-lasting results. Since water dilutes the active components in traditional products, waterless skincare ensures that your skin receives a higher concentration of beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids. This increased potency helps to address various skin concerns more effectively, from dryness and sensitivity to dull and inflamed skin.

A hydration concentrate is one way to think of a body or facial oil. A traditional cream or moisturiser is water-based and contains lots of different fillers with very little actual goodness. Most skincare moisturisers, lotions, and creams on the shelf contain up to 70–90% water, with a tiny amount of the oils and nutrients that actually provide moisture and hydration to your skin. Our moisturising serum contains zero water or fillers and only 100% pure, potent organic or wild-harvested ingredients to give your skin all the goodness it needs and deserves.

Cost-Efficiency: One of the other significant benefits of waterless skincare is that you're not paying for water and bulking agents commonly found in traditional skincare products. As an oil-based product is very concentrated, a little goes a very long way. By eliminating the need for water as a filler, waterless products often require smaller quantities per application, making them more cost-effective in the long run.

Customers often comment to us that 'a few drops go a long way' and they need a lot less product to see even bigger results.

Sustainability: Creating waterless skincare also aligns with our sustainability values. By using less water in production, our products contribute to reducing overall water consumption and waste. Additionally, since waterless formulations often require less packaging due to their concentrated nature, they contribute to minimising packaging waste and lowering carbon emissions associated with transportation and delivery, and because you need to buy them less frequently due to how long they last.

So what do we put in our skincare when we take the water out?!

Here are just 5 of the organically produced, naturally occurring, or wild-harvested plants, flowers, and botanicals that we use in our waterless skincare:

Baobab seed oil is found in a number of our products including our SOS Recovery facial oil, Keep The Peace balancing and clearing facial oil and Immortelle Everlasting Radiance facial balm.

Perfectly suited to dry and delicate skin, especially in mature complexions, it is particularly soothing and calming for skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, and also can help to repair weather-damaged skin.

Baobab seed oil also contains a wide array of vitamins and phytonutrients including vitamins A, D and E, and it has impressive toning and moisturising properties to deliver a wide range of benefits to the skin.

Blue spirulina is what gives our Luminous Lavender cleansing balm its incredibly vibrant blue hue. Spirulina is a powerful algae extract, and can help to boost the overall health and radiant appearance of our skin, leaving it smooth, bright and super-healthy. It can also help to reduce inflammation, tone the skin and encourage cell turnover to leave it purified, soft, smooth and toned with less visible imperfections.

Borage Flower Seed Oil has the highest content of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) of any oil, which is why it made the list when it came to formulating our SOS Recovery Facial Oil and our Immortelle Everlasting Radiance facial balm.

This high GLA content can help to regenerate and and rejuvenate our skin’s barrier function, and to decrease moisture loss. It also contains high levels of linoleic acid which can help to prevent wrinkles, dry skin and premature ageing, whilst ellagic acid supports the production of collagen and regenerates skin cells. Ferulic acid protects and soothes sun and weather damaged skin, and tannins help to calm redness and minimise pore size.

Mango seed butter is packed full of rejuvenating qualities, including a natural and stable form of vitamin C which brightens the skin, as well as saturated and unsaturated fatty acids which moisturise, repair and revitalise all three skin layers.  We use its plant-power in our Immortelle Everlasting Radiance Facial Balm and in our Luminous Lavender Cleansing Balm.

We don't use any artificial preservatives in our formulas; instead we use rosemary CO2 extract, a powerful and concentrated antioxidant which delays the oxidation and spoiling of delicate plant oils.  It is a natural preservative that helps to provide an extended shelf-life without the need to use any harsh synthetic chemicals.
